Kaos. Panic, anger and confusion ahead of Romanian parliamentary elections

The surprise raise of the far-right, pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu in presidential elections sent Romanian society into a spiral of panic, anger and confusion ahead of key parliamentary elections scheduled Sunday. Georgescu (62), running as independent, came from nowhere to win the first round of presidential elections, with some 23% of the votes. He was followed by centrist, progressist Save Romania Union (USR) candidate Elena Lasconi and incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, a Social Democrat (PSD), both at 19%. From the 6th to the 9th of June 2024, EU citizens across 27 member countries went to the polls to elect their representatives at the European Parliament for the next five years. The election is one of the largest in the world and will determine the political direction of the European Union.
